ISO 9001 FAQ

ISO 9001 is one of the quality management systems in the ISO 9000 family. It is a framework of standards designed to help businesses and organizations ensure that consistently meet the needs of their customers and (or) stakeholders where statutory and regulatory requirements in relation to their products and services are concerned.

ISO 9001 is the only standard in the ISO 9000 family of quality management systems that requires certification. A business or organization is ISO 9001 certified when it has met the ISO 9001 requirements for an appropriate and effective quality management system.

If, in your business, you have encountered a contract that requires your organization to be ISO 9001 certified, then ISO 9001 certification is certainly a must for you. Government contracts may sometimes require your organization to be ISO 9001 certified in order to secure them, but not exclusively. Typically, there are a number of industries that greatly benefit from ISO 9001 certification and those are, but not limited to:

  • Construction companies
  • Engineering firms
  • Technology firms
  • Manufacturers
  • Hospitality businesses
  • Community service providers
  • Healthcare providers

To become ISO 9001 certified, you have to meet the requirements as defined by ISO in ten sections or clauses. Out of the ten sections, only sections four through to ten are auditable and those are the clauses your business or organization will have to satisfy. They are:

4. Context of the Organization – aligning your business goals and objectives with the quality management system by determining internal and external issues, expectations and needs of the concerned parties, the scope of the QMS and its processes

5. Leadership – concerning demonstrated leadership and commitment of the top management in your organization where an established quality policy is effectively communicated and where responsibilities and authorities are clearly assigned, conveyed, and understood by everyone concerned.

6. Planning – where business and organizational risks, opportunities, changes and quality objectives are to be planned for and addressed.

7. Support – concerning the resources required for the quality management system including supporting resources, ensuring employee awareness and competence and related documentation.

8. Operation – concerns itself with the planning and control procedures the services and products are required to meet.

9. Performance Evaluation – where ISO 9001 requires your QMS to monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate the performance of your quality management system.

10. Improvement – ISO 9001 is also concerned with continuing improvement. This includes identification of opportunities for improvement, taking action against non-conformance (including correction where necessary) and an ongoing improvement of your QMS.
